Abstract:

Sediments relatively high in clay are especially susceptible to base exchange, and consequently their properties may be modified substantially. Base exchange, however, is by no means confined to alluvial deposits. It may also be involved in the weathering and transformation of various kinds of rocks. As is well known, the zeolites undergo base exchange actively. Noll's (13) work indicates that certain hydrothermal minerals also possess important base-exchange properties.
