Abstract:
Studies of the geologic characteristics and underground fluids utilization in the Ahuachapan field have permitted an adequate exploitation of the geothermal system. Equilibrium between recharge and mass withdrawal has been established by a geothermal production and reinjection program.
The first geothermal power unit at Ahuachapan, with a capacity of 30 MW, was commissioned in May 1975; a second unit of the same size started operations 1 year later. The construction of the third unit of 35 MW is presently in progress and will bring the total installed capacity to 95 MW in January 1980.
New geothermal areas in the eastern part of the country are under exploration. Geologic, geophysical, and geochemical surveys are under way and temperatures up to 286°C were measured in the first deep well drilled.
