Abstract:
The distribution, morphology, internal structure, and chemical composition of ferromanganese nodules in the Pacific Ocean reflect the circumcontinental and latitudinal zonality of sedimentation processes and such local factors as depth of the ocean, composition of substratum, intensity of diagenetic processes, intensity of halmyrolysis of volcanic rocks, hydrothermal activity, and changes of near-bottom current velocity. The age of formation of ferromanganese nodules and crusts on the ocean floor varies in different regions. In the pelagic regions the nodules are mainly of Pleistocene or, locally, pre-Quaternary age. Detailed research on selected geologic polygons gives important information for the study of the irregularity of ferromanganese distribution and composition ithin main ore fields.
