Numerous theories have been proposed to explain the origin of subsurface carbon dioxide. The conclusion is reached that, although carbon dioxide may be formed in many ways, most of the carbon dioxide, in appreciably large accumulations had its origin in the breakdown of impure limestone or dolomite under the heat of igneous intrusion.
