Abstract:

We present three models for rifting at passive continental margins which primarily involve extension, thinning, and heating of the lithosphere. These models lead to predictions of postrift evolution of the margins including consequences of conductive cooling of the lithosphere and the lithosphere's isostatic response to loading by sediments and water. The response to loading is described using an elastic plate approximating the mechanical behavior of the lithosphere. We assume that plate thickness, and therefore rigidity is a function of temperature. The lower boundary of the elastic plate corresponds to an isotherm. Thus, the rigidity of the margin increases as the margin cools, and varies with position across the margin. We compare model predictions with observe data for the Nova Scotian continental margin.
