Abstract:

Crustal subsidence on passive margins is caused by three main processes: 1) crustal thinning by horizontal extension, 2) increase in crustal density and crustal attenuation as a result of phase transitions, and 3) cooling of the crust and mantle after a continental breakup. Rapid intracontinental subsidence and formation of inland seas is mainly associated with the second process. Additional subsidence of passive margins and inland seas is produced by the load of sediments.
