Abstract:

The locations, in space and time, of the collisions between island arcs and the eastern margin of North America suggest that the Iapetus Ocean plate moved north relative to the continent during the Ordovician. But the final collisions of North America with Scandinavia and Avalon suggest relative westward movement of the oceanic plate in the Late Silurian and Early Devonian.
