Book Title: M 35: Petroleum Geochemistry and Basin Evaluation

Article/Chapter: Petroleum Geology of the Bakken Formation Williston Basin, North Dakota and Montana

Subject Group: Geochemistry, Generation, Migration

Spec. Pub. Type: Memoir

Pub. Year: 1984

Author(s): Fred F. Meissner

Abstract:

The Bakken Formation is relatively thin and is found (relatively) deep in the Williston basin. In spite of its insignificant volume (compared to the total sedimentary section) its organic-rich shales are documented source rocks. The generation/migration scheme postulated for the Bakken (source rock) and its associated oil-productive reservoirs are believed to be somewhat universal in units and basins throughout the world.
