Abstract:

The exceptional and somewhat unique occurrence of oil in the metamorphic "basement complex" of the Edison oil field is reviewed. The stratigraphy and structure of the field are outlined briefly with emphasis on broad geologic conditions under which oil has accumulated in the basement rocks. An objective analysis of the oil deposit is attempted and observations as to what constitutes an attractive structure for the accumulation of oil in buried metamorphic rocks are presented. Where possible, illustrations and graphic charts are used to portray objective material and geologic concepts.
