Abstract:

Western North Carolina, encompassing the Piedmont and Blue Ridge provinces, is in general an area of marked tectonism; the Blue Ridge is essentially a thrust plate with major lateral displacement. Petroleum production possibilities of the area are problematic, but lower Paleozoic strata below the thrust may be prospective. Regional gravity data in western North Carolina and adjacent areas show a large regional minimum. Similar gravity minima in the Arkoma basin and northeastern Pennsylvania--south-central New York areas coincide with basin depocenters. The gravity anomaly in western North Carolina likewise may be correlative with a depocenter.
