Abstract:

The Green River and associated structural basins in southwestern and south-central Wyoming and adjacent areas in northwestern Colorado and northeastern Utah encompass 37,150 sq mi (96,210 sq km). The rock section includes units of all Phanerozoic systems except the Silurian, and rocks of nearly all systems have been productive of oil and natural gas. Half of the oil produced in the district has come from Paleozoic rocks, whereas gas is predominant in younger reservoirs. Proved reserves of 1.74 billion bbl of oil and 6.5 trillion cu ft of gas possibly can be raised to 7.67 billion bbl and 24.15 trillion cu ft, respectively, by deep drilling, particularly in the western part of the Green River basin, and by a sophisticated search for more stratigraphic traps. Approximately alf the additional reserves probably will be found in Cretaceous rocks.
