Abstract
Entrainment and Distribution of Different Sand Sizes Under Water Waves
Peter Nielsen
ABSTRACT
Analysis of the bed sediment and suspended sediment collected at different elevations over wave ripples shows that for grain sizes larger than 0.5 mm the likelihood of entrainment into suspension decreases with increasing grain size, whereas for the finer material (diameter smaller than 0.5 mm) the amount of suspended material is proportional to the amount available in the bed material. The concentration profiles for individual sieve fractions very similar upwards from about 4 cm above the ripple crest, so that the grain-size distribution for suspended sand above this level varies very little with elevation. All of this taken together indicates that the finer material that goes into suspension is not going to be sorted whereas the coarsest material will be singled out.
